Make sure your autoupdate is enabled in Windows XP or Vista.

WindowsXP: Right click on My Computer and select Properties. In there you will see an AutoUpdate Tab. For Vista right click on My Computer and select Windows Update. You will find information about windows update in there.

Use a media server to distribute video/movies, music, pictures to multiple machines and TV’s.
A NAS (Network Attached Storage) device can be used for the storage of a Media Server over the network.

What do you want the Media server for? Are you using mostly music or video? These questions may help you?

If you want hotswappable drives for a media server, your best bet is to pick up a NAS device that has hotswappable drives.

A simple NAS solution: http://www.freenas.org/ This will run on a very old machine with little resources.

DaveAC in the chat room asked about what drive size would be good. I suggested that since drive prices are so low, you couldn’t go wrong getting 1TB drives. Joel added that it depends on what you are using it for. Ripping DVD’s into ISO’s, Music, etc.

In his home, Joel uses a TVIXBOX along with FreeNAS.

Popcorn A100 has received great reviews and is afforable.

In this video, I share an easter egg from flickr.com just in time for the holidays. Flickr’s hidden feature involves adding a note to a photo with the phrase “ho ho ho hat” and a Santa hat appears! You can position and resize the hat anywhere on your photo. Add the phrase “ho ho ho beard” and you can add a beard to your photo. You can add snow to the entire page by adding ?snow=1 at the end of the URL. All of this is done at flickr.com, absolutely free! Enjoy!

In this video, I quickly show a new feature that Youtube quietly rolled out regarding HD videos. Now if you click the “Watch in HD” link for HD videos, it now resizes the video and takes over the top portion of the screen. It’s a fairly large size and makes for a better experience. Well, I managed to croak out some Christmas carols this year. My wife accompanied me on the piano on all of these songs as well as sang with me on all of them. My daughters joined me on We Three Kings, Mary Did You Know?, The Peace Carol, and Away in A Manger.

There were a number of requests that I just could not meet for various reason including, my voice wouldn’t hold out and you can only keep a 1 year old quiet for so long. In fact, you will hear him a number of times through out the songs joining in.

If you have bought a new computer recently, you may already have Windows Media Center. Windows Media Center comes with Microsof Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate operating systems.

How to connect Windows Media Center to your TV

Most new HD TV’s come with a computer or VGA port where you can plug your monitor or display port from the back of your computer. Also If you have a Computer with HDMI or DVI out, this could also connect to your TV.

If you have an Xbox 360, you can connect to your Windows Media Center PC over your home network. This comes in handy when your computer is in your home office and you TV is in your living room. All features on your Windows Media Center are accesible via the Xbox 360 over the network.

In this video, I give a brief description of the latest update from Valve on the popular game, Team Fortress 2. In it, the Engineer class received a boost to two of the buildable objects: The teleporter and the dispenser. Both of these can now be upgraded to level 3. The spy received a boost as well as he can now recharge his cloaking device by picking up ammunition or recharging at a dispenser. There are also some misc particle effects and improvements in this update. Enjoy!

In this video, I give some tips on how to best prepare high definition (HD) video for upload to Youtube and other video sharing sites which support HD. The first tip is to note the 1,024 (1GB) limit on Youtube or whatever video site you use. HD video tends to be very large in size and it’s important to note the size before uploading to your video sharing site. The next tip is the make sure you have a proper HD source device. Make sure your video camera supports at least 720p resolution (1280×720). My camera, Canon Powershot TX1, supports 720p and goes for about $400. The Flip Mino HD costs $200 - $250 and the Kodak Z16 Pocket HD costs $179. Both of these support 720p video. If you already have an HD camcorder (I have a Canon HV20), you can use that as well. The next tip is encoding. I use VisualHub (which has been discontinued) for Mac, but there are tools such as Virtualdub, SUPER, and Handbrake for Windows that can do the same thing. When encoding, make sure you enable RTSP streaming, and also enable H.264 support. H.264 gives great video quality with high compression and also is compatible with most mobile devices such as the iPhone. Once the files have finished converting, make sure the resulting file size is less than 1GB or whatever your favorite site’s limit is. Once that’s done, you can go ahead and upload it! The benefit of this client is to perform tasks on your already established Strands community. Unfortunately, you can’t explore the community and add new friends. Tips to help protect your kids while they are online

Encourage your kids to share their internet experiences with you. Surf the internet with your children. (Maybe put the computer in a common area of the home)
Let your kids know, if they feel nervous about anything online they should let you know.
Infom your kids not to give out your address, or any other personal information.
Teach your kids that the difference between right and wrong is hte same on the interne as it is in real life.
Teach you kids to respect others online. Rules for good behaviour don’t change just because they’re on a computer.
Teach your kids that not everything they read or see online is true. Encourage them to ask you if they’re not sure.
Control your childrens online activity with advanced internet software. Parental controls can help you filter out harmful content, monitor the sites you child visits, and find out what they do there.

Using Windows Vista’s Parental Controls

User accounts

Create separate user account for each of your children.
After you create the account to go that account and select ‘Setup Parental Controls’
Select your child’s account that you want to monitor
You must select ‘On, enforce current settings’

Some of the things you can do with parental controls in Vista

Control allowed websites, downloads and other use (web filtering)
Set time limits for your children
Control what kind of games your child can play.
Allow and block specific programs.

In this video, I review an addictive game for the iPhone called Smiles. Chris Pirillo of http://chris.pirillo.com and http://youtube.com/lockergnome was nice enough to allow me to review this game for him. Smiles is actually two games in one. It is offered on the iTunes App Store for $4.99 and includes 3 game modes: Zen, Drop, and Avalanche. You can also purchase the Zen and Drop modes as separate games for $2.99. After playing the game for a few hours (they go by fast), I found the "Drop" mode to be my favorite. It reminded me of Bejeweled but with a nice twist. As you match 3 similar shapes on the screen, they disappear, and the ones above it "drop", hence the name, Drop. Smiles also offers achievements to give you something to shoot for. There's more to the game, so check out the video review to get a feel for how the game plays. Enjoy!

In this video, I unbox my very first bag of crap from woot.com. Occasionally, woot offers a "woot-off" where it sells goods at bargain prices until they sell out. A woot legend is that they offered a $1.00 "Random Bag of Crap" and included a 61" HDTV. This round, people actually received Microsoft Zune's for a mere $1. In this video, I share what I got from the Random Bag of Crap. Note that it is very difficult to land a Random Bag of Crap from a woot-off since there is so much interest. Most times the web server crashes and you can't even get through. I was fortunate enough to land one this past woot-off (in November). Enjoy my excitement!

In this video, I talk about a game that I grew up with, Uno! I played this game mostly with my family for hours on end and it showed when the Xbox 360 version was released. I played it for many hours and I got the most achievements out of any other game I've owned. On the iPhone, the Uno experience is very similar to that of the Xbox 360. You can play against computer players or play against other iPhone players via Wifi. The interface and sounds are top notch and it captures the Uno experience perfectly. I definitely believe Uno to be worth the entire $7.99 I paid for it on the iTunes App Store. I high recommend you check it out today!

In this video, I give instructions on how to customize your iPhone's SMS screen. This requires your iPhone to be jailbroken (i.e. hacked) so that you can utilize Cydia and Winterboard to activate these customizations. Several individuals in the iPhone community have created SMS themes ranging from Mario Brothers to Apple. The background and the chat bubbles are customized to match whichever theme you choose. This is just another way to pimp out your iPhone's interface after you have jailbroken it. Enjoy!
