Ben's Tech Show: Wordpress 2.7 and Comcast

Hi Guys and Gals,
I wanted to let you know about some news with me and this site, first of all I did an upgrade to wordpress. I was a little reluctant on upgrading wordpress because of the erlyer bugs in the older versions. but after hearing some very good reviews and stories about version 2.7, I did the upgrade and it went smooth as ice in December (opps it is still December), The dash board is very nice and not as cluttered as 2.6 but now I have to get used to the Drupal looking interface.

The other good news is I got a letter from Comcast they are giving me the “High Speed Proformance” Internet package, meaning 6mb down and 1mb up starting January 20th. The odd thing is when I went to do a speed test with speakeasy.com and I get about 5mb down and 300kb up, BUT when I do my own test like with this web server, downloads are only 700kb down and 45kb up THAT SUCKS! I dont know where these guys who do the speed tests are from but I dont get anywhere near that speed I only WISH I had that speed, anyway Comcast is discontinuing the “lite package” and are giving an upgrade to those who are on that plan at the same price YAY!

Oh and I almost forgot I figured out how to put a paypal donation button on the side bar and I know if you click the post link it will show the donation link, but I want it to show in the main page at the end of the post so I will be doing that also.
Well I’m off to bed have a Merry Christmas and I will Talk to you in the New Year.

I was listing to bwaba.org radio, and he wanted to know what are your top 10 websites you used for 2008. So here is my list for 2008.
10. Myspace.com - I do have friends on myspace but I mostly use them for the games IE. Mobsters.
9. Youtube.com - I go here for the good tunes like ronaldjenkees this dude is just jaw droping HUH?
8. Weatherunderground.com - Supporting the amateur forecasters.
7. Hulo.com - Like most, I didn’t believe Hulu would ever take off. Till I went to the site. Now I’m hooked to a movie or two a week.
6. Yahoo! Mail - Not may favorite Mail service, but I’ve been using them for years, so a lot of spam about a thousand a day.
5. Ustream.tv - I do my stream on here as well as watch Podnutz Daily, and Mike Tech Show
4. Google.com - I use google for mostly miss spelled words LOL.
3. Gmail - The best mail service I have ever used.
2. Twitter - I love twitter I’m glad I signed up. At first i though aha just a nother myspace, well WRONG love it hey add me @nebben.

Best Buy isn’t immune to the economic crisis and had a very rough last quarter. The country’s largest electronic retailer watched same-store sales fall 5.3% over last years and net earnings take a 77% face plant. Best Buy did see a net sales increase but that was due to new store openings. Blue-collar terms? They aren’t doing so well, they’ve offered 4,000 corporate employees a buyout.

The voluntary plan includes 7.5 months of severance pay along with one year of health care, life insurance and outplacement services to those who leave the company now to January 5th. Employees whose age plus years with the company reach 60 will receive 12 months of severance.

Best Buy has not publicly announced their target number of buyouts or other cost cutting measures, but they have alluded to the idea that there is more to come. With Circuit City down, what’s left? Best Buy and Wal-Mart, which means we need to keep a close eye on both to see where we’ll be shopping in the future.

The Seattle Tech Report … reports that a motion (PDF link) filed last week in a Seattle, Washington lawsuit claims that Microsoft was aware of the widespread Xbox 360 disc scratching issues — the console will severely scratch discs if tilted or moved during play — before the console was launched in 2005. The motion, which seeks class action status for the lawsuit, cites quotes from a (currently sealed) document in which Microsoft employees claim that they were aware of the problem before the console was launched. The document quotes Microsoft program manager Hiroo Umeno who stated that the problem was discoverd in “September or October” 2005.
Microsoft supposedly considered several solutions to the problem prior to launch and rejected them all. Three solutions were considered, including increasing the disc holder’s magnetic field, slowing disc rotation speed and installing “bumpers.” The first was rejected because it would “interfere” with the disc loading mechanism, the second because it would extend game load times, and the third because it was too expensive (to the tune of $35 to $75 million). The only action taken by Microsoft, apparently, was to add a warning to the Xbox 360 manual. The company later applied a warning label onto the disc drive itself and established a program to replace scratched discs (for a fee).
